Since her days growing up outside Chicago, Carlin has explored the different ways people operate and thrive. After concentrating in sociology and creative writing at Hamilton College in upstate New York, she found her calling while teaching English in the Peace Corps. Her last 10 years have been devoted to coordinating exceptional student services programs for a PK-8 Montessori charter school and a PBL charter school, both in Western Colorado. Her Master’s degree is in multicultural special education from CU-Boulder, and she holds teaching licenses in Special Education, ESL, and Gifted & Talented education.
Carlin is excited to have participated in the 2016-17 residency program at High Tech High’s Graduate School of Education (GSE) in San Diego, California. This digital portfolio was designed to reflect her work and learnings as she investigates issues of diversity and access within High Tech High’s Project-Based Learning model. Her evolving educational philosophy is grounded in improving life-long outcomes for individuals and communities through empowerment, social justice, and personal well-being.
Since 2017, Carlin has resumed her work as the head of the Inclusion Department at Animas High School, a small project-based learning school in Durango, Colorado. She continues to spread the word about all things related to Inclusion! Her self-published booklet, Inclusion Leadership Toolkit, is available for purchase here.
Carlin meets her own needs through writing, music, traveling, practicing yoga and doing just about anything outdoors.
